Why one is never enough…
Every year I take a vow to inject lots more colour into my wardrobe. I visualise a rainbow array of dresses hanging up, a tantalising view to the eye. Jade green, fuschia pink, ruby red… yet there is always some little black dress that catches the corner of my eye and at a glance, has me sucked in again. Like an ex-lover you know is you mustn’t go back to, yet you can’t stay away. “Another black dress?” my mother will say, “You can’t have enough black dresses!” I reply with a smile.
With an explosion of colour being seen in the Spring / Summer 2011 fashion shows of late, it might seem wrong to dwell on a black dress when there is so many more colours to experiment with. However tempting these may be, I can’t help but find myself drawn to a gorgeous LBD.
You see, there is always a new black dress that can be added to my collection, one that appears seemingly more beautiful than the previous purchase. An embellished panel, a sexy backless design or leather fabric, there are many wonderful and unique little black dresses available out there, and I am determined to own plenty of them.
So what is the appeal of the Lbd? What makes it so special? Many people say it’s because black is the most slimming colour. However I believe it is much more than this. The allure of the Lbd is much more seductive. Its classic, beautiful and no matter what, goes with any type of shoe, whether it be metallic or pop of colour. Movie and style icon Audrey Hepburn favoured the little black dress for her choice of evening wear and always looked ultra chic and beautiful. Jennifer Aniston often opts for an Lbd for her choice of red-carpet wear and hasn’t got it wrong yet.
People may claim that the colour black is dull or even more shockingly – “boring” however never underestimate the power of the little black dress when it comes to party season or a job interview. Always the safe but chic option, it will take you from day to night whilst ensuring you always maintain that perfectly polished look.
The highly groomed Victoria Beckham has a love for the minimalistic black dress and always looks fabulous, no matter where she is. If you’re looking for fashion credibility all you need is the right accessories and structure to look super stylish.
So this year there will be no more bids to banish the little black dresses that may appear suddenly into my life. If a fabulous one shows up on one of my shopping spree’s then so be it, its clearly fate. Yet one thing I can’t wait to get my hands on is one of Christopher Kane’s neon inspired lace dresses or a pair of Marc Jacobs purple wide-legged trousers, therefore bold colour seems inevitable in 2011. Maybe I’ll team them with an Lbj (little black jacket) this time instead.
